It’s not uncommon for international students to experience homesickness. Missing your friends, family and your country is normal, but it can leave you feeling a little sad.
So, with that in mind, here are some helpful ways to combat homesickness whilst you’re studying.
You can often get caught up studying and doing work in your room. Whilst it’s great to be invested in your course work, try not to stay in your room too much. It can be tempting to treat your room as a safe haven that you can relax in but spending too much time in your room can leave you feeling isolated. Go for a walk and immerse yourself in your new surroundings, grab a coffee and watch the world go by or take part in social activities to keep yourself occupied and surrounded by other people.
Bringing items that remind you of home can be a great way to stay connected to your country whilst you are away. Whether it’s your own pillow, a blanket, a picture or something with sentimental value, having it in your new home can ease your homesickness.
You’ll find students from all over the world whilst you’re studying so chances are, someone from your country will also be studying. Having the chance to meet someone from your country can help with your homesickness. Some students find simply having the opportunity to speak their own language and discuss their own culture makes them feel a lot more comfortable. You’ll probably find that other international students, and even students from the UK, will be experiencing the same thing.
One source of homesickness can be not feeling comfortable in your new surroundings. By learning about your new country, immersing yourself in the culture and familiarising yourself with your new environment, it will help you settle in more quickly and feel right at home. Getting to know the city or town that you’re living in is essential if you’re going to feel happy!
Whether it’s a phone call every couple of weeks, email updates or even a whatsapp group, keeping in touch with your friends and family back home can make you feel closer to them. Try not to go overboard though as too much contact with home can leave you feeling disconnected from your new surroundings. It’s important to get the balance right.
